Ballet and Books is a national non-profit organization striving to reduce the literacy gap through the hybrid storytelling of dance and reading In our extracurricular programming led by high school and college students we provide 3-9-year-olds with an opportunity to improve their literacy skills through a combination of dance instruction and dialogic reading Our mentees are mainly children from low-income families and communities of color The Ballet and Books mission is to give these children the skill sets to build literacy confidence and leadership through mentorship and dance We understand that it is essential for all children to have mentors they can relate to and recruit mentors who can both relate to their mentees backgrounds but also teach our children how to build community with people who are different from them This is the power of bridging literacy and dance through mentorship
