SINCE 1958, HEARING HEALTH FOUNDATION HAS BEEN THE LEADING NONPROFIT FUNDER FOR FUNDING FOR BASIC, CLINICAL AND TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH IN HEARING AND BALANCE SCIENCE, AND A LEADER IN DRIVING NEW INNOVATIONS AND TREATMENTS FOR PEOPLE WITH HEARING LOSS, TINNITUS, AND OTHER HEARING CONDITIONS. THIS INCLUDES FUNDING RESEARCH THAT LED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF COCHLEAR IMPLANTS AND MANY OF TODAY'S STANDARD TREATMENTS FOR OTOSCLEROSIS (ABNORMAL BONE GROWTH IN THE EAR) AND EAR INFECTIONS. IN THE 1990'S HEARING HEALTH FOUNDATION ADVOCATED IN WASHINGTON, DC, FOR UNIVERSAL NEWBORN HEARING SCREENING LEGISLATION, TO DETECT HEARING LOSS AT BIRTH. TODAY, 98% OF NEWBORNS ARE TESTED (UP FROM 4% IN 1994).
