In 2011, the city of Rikuzentakata was destroyed by a tsunami from the Great Japan earthquake. In 2013, a boat called Kamome washed ashore in Crescent City. William Steven was a Commander for the Del Norte County Sheriffs Department and he had the idea of involving high school students to clean the boat up and return it to its owner. The boat was a training vessel from Takata High School. In 2014, the high school students traveled to Rikuzentakata, Japan and returned the boat. Both coastal communities have much in common. The Kamome Foundation supports the following activities: 1)Sister school relationship between Del Norte High and Takata High, 2)Bring business leaders together to support the sister city relationship between Rikuzentakata, Japan and Del Norte County/Crescent City, California, and 3) Bring government officials together to share information on emergency planning and response to natural disasters.
