LEAD PITTSBURGH (LEAD) IS A NON-PROFIT CORPORATION FOUNDED TO INCREASE COMMUNITY UNDERSTANDING ABOUT ISSUES RELATING TO DEPRESSION. LEAD BELIEVES THAT DEPRESSION CAN IMPACT ANYONE IN THE COMMUNITY. THE INITIAL FOCUS OF LEAD WAS BROAD: TO INCREASE EDUCATION AND AWARENESS ABOUT DEPRESSION. LEAD STRESSED THE NEED TO DE-STIGMATIZE DEPRESSION. LEAD HAS LEARNED THAT 20% OF COLLEGE STUDENTS PRESENT WITH DEPRESSION. CONCERN FOR YOUNG ADULTS RESULTED IN LEAD'S DECISION TO FOCUS ON WHAT COULD BE DONE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR THIS POPULATION. COLLEGE FRESHMAN FACE OPPORTUNITY, EXCITEMENT AND CHALLENGE; LAUNCHING A COLLEGE CAREER IS FRAUGHT WITH EXCITEMENT, TRANSITION, AND CHANGE. THUS, IT IS A TIME OF STRESS, WHICH CAN LEAD TO ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION.
