Mission Statement

THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDES EDUCATIONAL, RECREATIONAL, COUNSELING AND SOCIAL PROGRAMS IN THE AFTERNOON, EVENING AND SUMMER, FOR STATEN ISLAND TEENAGERS AND YOUNG ADULTS IN A FREE ISLAND-WIDE PROGRAM HOUSED IN PUBLIC SCHOOL FACILITIES. ITS PROGRAMS ARE PRIMARILY FUNDED THROUGH THE NEW YORK CITY DEPARTMENT OF YOUTH AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AS A RESULT OF A COMMUNITY INITIATIVE BY CONCERNED CITIZENS WHO RESPONDED TO THE CHALLENGE OF PROVIDING POSITIVE ALTERNATIVES TO YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE WAKE OF THE FINANCIAL CRISIS IN NEW YORK CITY THAT FORCED THE CLOSING OF MANY OF THE NYC DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION'S AFTERNOON AND EVENING CENTERS. SINCE THEN, THE ORGANIZATION HAS GROWN FROM A SINGLE RECREATIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL CENTER TO A BOROUGH-WIDE NETWORK OF RECREATIONAL, EDUCATIONAL, AND SUMMER CAMP PROGRAMS THAT OFFER QUALITY PROGRAMMING IN RESPONSE TO COMMUNITY NEED. THE CENTERS OFFER TUTORIAL AND HOMEWORK HELP, CULTURAL ENRICHMENT, COUNSELING, AFTER-SCHOOL CHILDCARE, AND SPORTS PROGRAMS.
